How to Apply the Blood of Jesus
Introduction
This study was born from a conversation I had with a dear friend, in which she said about the fact that “we need to apply the blood of Jesus”. This got me really thinking. How can I, practically apply the blood of Jesus? In the Old Testament, blood was applied by usually dipping hyssop into the blood of a sacrificed animal and then applying it or sprinkling it with that.
In the society and culture that most of us live in now, we don’t like to think too much about blood do we? Our meat, fish and poultry is mainly killed for us and all ‘the necessary’ is done for us and when we get to purchase it, it’s all packed nicely for us.
However, when the bible was written, life was totally different. Not only in eating habits but also because the sacrificial system of worship was still very much in play and the reader would understand far more differently than we do now.
The bible makes it clear that without the shedding of blood, there can be no forgiveness or remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22).
How then do we apply the precious blood of Jesus? Well, it’s just like a lot of other things in the bible; we have to apply it by faith.
Faith comes by hearing and, hearing the through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17).
Unless we know what God’s Word says about the blood of Jesus, we have nothing with which to apply our faith. Therefore, knowledge is key! Of course, it goes beyond just mere head knowledge, although this is a good starting point. It needs to travel that 18 inches or so from our heads into our hearts and we need to actually believe it!
“Without knowledge the people perish.” So Hosea tells us.
The bible makes it clear that all believers are now kings and priests (Revelation 1:6). Therefore, gone are the days when we must rely on a priest to apply the blood for us. We are responsible; not just for us, but for our families and loved ones too!
In preparing for this, I read a book by Andrew Murray, which was absolutely amazing. However, I wanted to do something myself. And so I just want to also share this, that anybody else could have done something like this as well. Through the amazing technology we have now to hand either with our phones, ipads, etc. I just did a search of the entire New Testament and copied the verses down that mentioned the blood of Christ. Then, I just put them under headings that I thought applied. Some verses were a bit perplexing and needed some further study.
This study contains words that are really necessary to understand, words like redemption. It’s amazing how one word can actually contain so much that it merits a whole study on its own. To avoid this, I have put a link in, where appropriate, for further study.
Under each sub-heading the verses mentioned are in order of appearance in the New Testament.
So, let’s begin and look at what the scriptures say about this amazing, precious blood of Jesus:

Atonement
As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for sins, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinner and allowing him or her to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was the only one capable of carrying out the Atonement for all mankind.
Acts 20:28
Therefore, take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. (NKJV)
What a responsibility to be an overseer of the church – the weight of this responsibility being in the fact that the church; the called out ones (ekklesia) cost God the blood of His Son.

Hebrews 9:18-22
Therefore, not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (ESV)
It was a one time sacrifice, no further ones needed and surpasses, by far the blood of animals or birds:
Hebrews 9:25

And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. (ESV)

and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
The blood of Abel speaks of vengeance. The blood of Jesus speaks of mercy and forgiveness.
